What is Beat?

Beat is an eating disorder charity within the UK. Beat exists to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. They are a charity where they can support, guide and advise anyone affected. Giving individuals experiencing an eating disorder and their loved ones a place where they feel listened to, supported and empowered. Here at the Leeds Beat society we are here to offer support to those who need it, whilst also spreading Beats message in order to try and end some of the stigmas and myths surrounding eating disorders.

Our Blog Posts...

This blog was designed in order to reach and be accessible for as many people as possible as we know that not everyone feels comfortable having face to face conversations that involve the discussion of eating disorders. Our blogs will be created by the whole team and will focus on a variety of topics from discussing the prospect of moving to university with an eating disorder to what to expect when you go to the GP for the first time regarding your eating disorder. Although we want our blog posts to be informative, we also want them to be light-hearted and pleasant for everyone to read. So, whether you have an eating disorder yourself, know someone with an eating disorder or just want to learn more, we hope you enjoy reading.

Rosie Nevison

President

Hi I'm Rosie the President of Beat Society this year! I'm a medical sciences student and an aspiring future doctor. I've been with Beat for 5 years now, volunteering as a young ambassador where I go around the country campaigning and sharing my story. I love being a part of Beat and can't wait to see where this year takes us. A fun fact about me: I play a sport you’ve probably never heard of: Korfball.

Lizzie Mitchell

Vice President

Hey, my name is Lizzie and I’m super hyped to be the Vice President of Beat next year! I volunteered for Beat a lot last year and found it so rewarding; eating disorders are a topic very close to my heart so I’m excited to work with such a lovely bunch of girls to better support students on campus, increase awareness and raise funds for such an incredible charity. Fun (and embarrassing) fact about me is my first job was working as a Christmas elf in Santa’s grotto in my local shopping centre.

Christie Attah

Official Volunteer

Heya all, my name is Christie and I am an official volunteer for Beat society!
I’m going into my third year of studying a Bsc in Nutrition. I’ve been part of the Leeds Beat society since it started up and it’s been the most wonderful opportunity to see it flourish and spread awareness on campus and I am very excited for the new year! I love Beat, I love their positive and encouraging ethos and I love all they do in raising awareness for Eating disorders and breaking the stigma associated with them. Fun fact about me is that when I was 14 I composed a song in German on guitar and threw in some wacky beatboxing.

Hey guys, I’m Emily and I am the new treasurer of Beat society this year. I’m going into my third year of psychology and can’t wait to spend my last year at uni being a part of this amazing society. I love how BEAT offers support to everyone and also raises awareness for eating disorders. I am super excited to work with all the lovely people involved. Fun fact about me: I have a pet tortoise named Oswald

Hiya, I’m Lizzie and I’m the social sec for BEAT Soc and I will be helping with organising socials and fundraisers throughout the year! I’m going into second year studying English Lit, and I’m so excited to be a part of the society! I think it’s so important to de-stigmatise (I think that’s a word..) talking about eating disorders, and I think BEAT soc is amazing for helping raise awareness and acceptance in the uni! A fun fact about me is that I busk on guitar and voice!

Lydia Davies

Hi, my name's Lydia, I am the Welfare Secretary for Beat for this year and I am a second year Mental Health Nursing student. As part of the committee, I hope to provide support for people across campus who struggle with any eating difficulties. If you have any suggestions, queries, or would like to get involved please don't hesitate to contact us! A fun fact about me is that I've spent the whole of lockdown learning to play Jolene by Dolly Parton on the guitar!

Molly Lawrenson

Public Relations Officer

Hi! I’m Molly and I’m the Public Relations officer for Leeds Beat Society! I study International history and politics and have been a body positivity advocate for the past year or so. I believe that social media can be a really good tool to spread awareness about all eating disorders, and not just the more commonly known ones. I’m so proud to be part of a society which is pushing that message across through our various social media platforms, this blog and the YouTube channel! Fun fact about me is that my middle name is named after the holiday camp, Haven.

Morgan Farrow

Research/Resources Secretary

Hi, I'm Morgan and I am the research and resources secretary for Beat this year! I am going into my second year of a Mental Health Nursing degree and feel that being a part of Beat society will really allow me to learn things that I wouldn't necessarily be able to learn on my course. I cannot wait to help raise awareness for eating disorders and raise money for Beat whilst also meeting lots of new people along the way! A fun fact about me is that I broke both of my arms within the space of 2 years, if that doesn't tell you that I'm clumsy, I don't know what will.

Tilly Owen

General Secretary

Hey everyone, I’m Tilly and I’ll be the new general secretary for Beat Soc this year. I’m brand new to Beat Soc this year but I have seen first hand how valuable Beat is as a support network and information hub for both sufferers and their loved ones and friends. I’m going into my final year studying Human Geography. I’m really excited to be part of Beat Soc Committee and seeing what we can achieve in raising money and awareness and most importantly being able to support as many people as possible through a bigger campus presence this year! Fun fact about me is that I've cheered on the sidelines for Leeds uni sports since being a fresher!

Where can I get help for my eating disorder in Leeds?

Leeds is incredibly lucky to have some incredible support services in place for those struggling with eating disorders and their families. Seeking help for an eating disorder is incredibly brave and Beat will always be here to support you along the way.

Going to your GP: When you move to Leeds we really recommend that you register with a GP in order to get support for any health problem you might face whilst at University. Your GP is going to be your main point of referral to access eating disorder services so its really important you see them as soon as possible. If you need any advice on speaking to your GP Beat have an incredible guide that you can access here.

Connect, West Yorkshire and Harrogate Eating Disorder Service: Connect is the main eating disorder service covering leeds. Within Connect there are many specialty teams such as a community and outreach support team, an inpatient ward at the Newsam Centre, a first intervention service and eating disorder support groups for both carers and sufferers. You can find out more about them here.

Connect Support Groups: Connect have a drop in support group on a Wednesday from 6.30-7.30pm which is facilitated by trained professionals and looks into issues with body image and food. You can drop into as my sessions as required. During COVID times they are hosting daily livestreams (Monday to Friday) on their instagram account which can be found here.

The Marketplace Leeds: The Marketplace is a mental health drop in centre that is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 3-6pm. You can access their information here.
